The Pug’s Final Mock Draft

Pick 11: New Orleans Saints

Team Needs: CB, S, LB, WR

Pick: Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State

After falling out of the top ten, the Saints get the best cornerback in this year’s draft class gift wrapped for them at number 11. Not only is Lattimore the best cornerback in the draft, the Saints have a huge need at the position. There are teams in the top ten that could ultimately end up drafting Lattimore, but if he does slip to this spot, this is a no-brainer pick for the Saints. With Lattimore’s skill set, Saints fans won’t be saying ‘Who Dat?’ when seeing him on the field for long.

Pick 12: Cleveland Browns (from Eagles)

Team Needs: QB, LB, CB, S

Pick: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

Interesting fact: Since 1990, the Browns have only had two seasons in which one quarterback started all 16 games (Bernie Kosar, 1991 and Tim Couch, 2001). Whether or not Watson falls to the Browns at 12, Cleveland is going to make this pick happen. The Browns are  a strong candidate to move up, as they try once again to find a franchise quarterback. Trying to find the next quarterback by selecting a player fresh off a brilliant performance in the 2017 College Football Championship Game and has fantastic leadership skills is a pretty good start. Eventually the Browns QB pick has to work out right?

Pick 13: Arizona Cardinals

Team needs: QB, LB, CB, S, WR

Pick: John Ross, WR, Washington

Arizona has a lot of positions to fill moving forward. Chances are this season is the final year for both Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald and both will leave big shoes to fill. Not to mention they lost Tony Jefferson to the Baltimore Ravens leaving a glaring hole at safety. the Cardinals need help at linebacker, a problem that could be solved if Daryl washington gets reinstated. Problem is I have a better chance of getting this mock draft right then of him getting reinstated. Ross could wind up being the ultimate home run in this year’s draft. Although his numbers speak volumes for his value, it was his impressive 4.22 40 time at the combine that shot him up most draft boards.

Pick 14: Philadelphia Eagles

Team Needs: CB, RB, DL, LB

Pick: Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama

Philadelphia finds themselves picking at 14 after trading Sam Bradford to the Vikings for their first round pick this year. Good thing since they traded their first rounder to the Browns to draft Carson Wentz second overall last season. Good thing they got back into the first round this season because both starters at corner last season for the Eagles are gone. Marlon Humphrey has the skill set to be a dominant corner for years to come for the Eagles.

Pick 15: Indianapolis Colts

Team Needs OL, DL, RB

Pick: Dalvin Cook, RB, Florida State

The Colts are drooling in this situation as they get to fill a huge need at running back with a dominant college football back. Although the Colts have a huge need to find offensive lineman that can keep Andrew Luck upright, the chance to replace the aging Frank Gore with Dalvin Cook will be too enticing. If Cook could find success in Indianapolis, it would be leaps and bounds towards returning the Colts to one of the league’s premiere offenses.

Pick 16: Baltimore Ravens

Team needs: LB, WR, CB

Pick: Corey Davis, WR, Central Michigan

The Ravens are in a spot where they need major help with an edge rusher and at wide receiver. With Corey Davis still on the board at 16, the Ravens should decide to give Joe Flacco some help. Some see Davis as the best wide out in this year’s class, and with Haason Reddick still on the board, the decision will not be an easy one for Baltimore. In the end, Davis gives them the best chance to improve immediately.

Pick 17: Washington Redskins

Team Needs: DL, LB, S, RB

Pick: Taco Charlton, Michigan

Surprisingly, but not undeserving, Taco Charlton is the first player from Michigan going off the board. All the hype leading into the draft lied with Jabrill Peppers out of Michigan, and the Redskins may consider him, but in the end the need to improve the defensive line is just too great. Charlton may have been a little inconsistent at Michigan, but he did have 9.5 sacks last season. There is no denying his potential and impressive power and speed combination.

Pick 18: Tennessee Titans

Team needs: CB, LB, WR

Pick: Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State

The Titans had to be super bummed to see Corey Davis get selected by the Ravens two spots in front of them, as they needs a number one receiver in a bad way. With the drop off after the first three receiving prospects significant, the Titans shift focus to filling another hole. Gareon Conley has a knack for shadowing receivers and will play well for the Titans in man coverage situations. Look out for the Titans, as grabbing two guys in the first round to improve their defense has them knocking on the door of a division title after coming so close last season.

Pick 19: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Team needs: LB, S, OL, CB

Pick: Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford

It seems as though Doug Martin will be given a second chance in Tampa. They still need safety help and a boost to the offensive line wouldn’t be unwelcomed. The Pug is on record through The Scrum Sports Podcast stating the Buccaneers would look in a different direction than McCaffrey. A guy can change his mind right? Although the Buccaneers would be wise to consider drafting Jabrill Peppers in this spot, but with uncertainty all over the Bucs RB depth chart, McCaffrey make the most sense. He is a multi-purpose back that is a great insurance plan to insure the running game is an asset and not a liability for team on the rise.

Pick 20: Denver Broncos

Team needs: OL, LB, DL

Pick: Cam Robinson, OG, Alabama

The Broncos are the team that will jump on the first offensive lineman in this draft. Denver has a need for someone to come in and start at the tackle position immediately. Even though fellow tackles Garett Bolles and Ryan Ramczyk may have the higher ceiling, Robinson is the most NFL-ready player right now. Considering the mess that was the Broncos offensive line last season, getting someone on the line that doesn’t look lost in the beginning of the season is a priority filled by Robinson. He has some character issues that might be why he dropped down to 20, but the Broncos have done a good job keeping players with character concerns successful (see Aqib Talib).
