Rays Sign Veteran INF, Send Robertson to AAA

Don’t tell the Tampa Bay Rays that their season is lost. Despite the recent struggles, the Rays recently took 2-of-3 from the Toronto Blue Jays and are now three games back of a Wild Card spot.

On Friday afternoon, the Rays signed veteran infielder Danny Espinosa. The switch-hitter has been signed and released by both the Angels and Mariners this season. Most recently he was released from Seattle on August 20.

Espinosa has spent eight seasons in the majors and has seen postseason play three times. He’s also been quite versatile, having played all four infield positions as well as left field, during his time in the majors.

What it Means

As a result, to make room on the active roster the Rays sent INF Daniel Robertson (seen above) to Triple-A Durham. In his rookie season Robertson has five home runs, 18 RBI, and a .211/.302/.340 slash line.

Rather than entertain the idea of trading away some of it’s talent before the August 31 deadline, in which players switching teams remain eligible for the postseason, it looks like GM Erik Neander and the rest of the Rays’ brass are sticking to their plan. They are doing everything they can to get to the post-season.
