Rays Sign Former Yankees Pitcher Eovaldi

Pay without play!

On Sunday, one day before his 27th birthday, the Tampa Bay Rays struck a deal with former Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. The deal is worth $2M for 2017 with a club option for 2018. Eovaldi will not pitch in 2017 as he is recovering from his second Tommy John surgery, thus the reason the Rays added the option. Incentives are included for 2018 if the Rays exercise their option.

The Yankees had high hopes for Eovaldi after trading Martin Prado to the Marlins for his services in December of 2014. In his first year with New York, Eovaldi racked up a career-high 14 wins. He wasn’t able to sustain that success in 2016 as he posted the worst ERA of his career (4.76) before eventually sucumbing to injury.

The Rays are hoping that their $2M investment will prove to be a bargain in 2018 once Eovaldi is healthy.
