Bronx Beatdown, Yankees Sweep Rays

Bummer in the Bronx

The Rays and Yankees squared off in an AL East showdown this week – here is a recap of the three-game series.

Monday

Alex Cobb got the ball for the Rays in Game 1. The Yankees countered with Michael Pineda. These two faced each other on April 5 in St Petersburg, with Cobb getting the better of Pineda.

Pineda’s Revenge

In the third inning, Jacoby Ellsbury doubled off Cobb, scoring Brett Gardner.

In the bottom-of-the-fourth, Aaron Judge homered to left field, extending the Yankees lead to two.

Another solo blast in the bottom-of-the-seventh – Chase Headley homered off of Cobb.

Pineda held the Rays hit-less until the seventh inning, when Evan Longoria broke up his bid for a perfect game. The Yankees starter got out of the seventh and into the eighth inning before a Logan Morrison home run ended his day. Pineda departed after 7.2IP – 2H – 1ER – 0BB – 11K, throwing 93 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Austin Pruitt came in to relieve Cobb, and that’s when the flood-gates opened. Pruitt gave up a triple to Chris Carter scoring Matt Holliday. After Carter’s triple, Starlin Castro homered which scored the two of them. The Yankees would cruise to victory – Pruitt continues to go through rookie struggles.

Yankees win 8-1

WP: M. Pineda (1-1; 3.97)

LP: A. Cobb (1-1; 3.46)

Wednesday

Blake Snell took the mound for Tampa Bay while Jordan Montgomery made his MLB debut on the mound for New York.

In the top-of-the-first, Rickie Weeks belted a two-run homer to left field, his first of the season. The Rays extended their lead in the fifth when Steven Souza Jr. scored on an error by Yankees catcher Jason Castro.

The Yankees got their first run of the game in the fifth inning when Snell walked Aaron Hicks with the bases loaded. Jumbo Diaz entered the game in the fifth. Snell finished after going 4.2IP – 2H – 0ER – 3BB – 1K.

The story remains the same with Snell – walks. This season, he has more walks (8) than strikeouts (6) through his 11 innings pitched.

Aaron Judge tied the game when he scored on a wild pitch by Diaz. At the end of the inning the score was 3-2 Rays.

In the sixth, Judge picked up an RBI single. After this, Xavier Cedeno came in to relieve Diaz. The Yankees added a few more runs and the Rays could not do anything with Aroldis Chapman’s stuff.

Yankees win 8-4

WP: B. Mitchell (1-0; 0.00)

LP: J. Diaz (0-1; 3.60)

S: A. Chapman (1)

Thursday

In the final game of the series, Matt Andriese took the mound for the Rays, trying to avoid the sweep. Luis Severino got the call for the Yankees.

Andriese gave up a homerun to Aaron Hicks in the first inning. The rest of the Yankees rode the wave of their left fielder on this day.

Rays catcher, Jesus Sucre collected an RBI single scoring Morrison – tying the game at one apiece. Replacing the injured Mallex Smith (hamstring), Peter Bourjos homered in the fifth giving the Rays a 2-1 lead.

Hicks stole the show, however. His second home run of the day, this time a two-run shot, put the Yankees on top for good. Once again it was Chapman who closed the door on the game and on the three-game sweep for the Bronx Bombers.

Yankees win 3-2

WP: L. Severino (1-0)

LP: X. Cedeno (1-1)

S: A. Chapman (2)

What’s Next:

The Rays head to Fenway Park for a four game set with the Boston Red Sox on Friday. The teams will play four games, with four completely different start times. The series caps off with a Monday morning game at 11am, Patriots Day in Massachusetts.

The last time the Rays took part in the annual Patriots Day Red Sox tradition, tragedy ensued on the streets outside the stadium. Certainly this day means a lot to the players and fans of Boston, but also, Rays players will no-doubt be thinking about their experiences on that tragic day in 2013.
