NFL’s Best Players To Wear Each Number: Part 2 #’s 10-19

#11: Phil Simms, Quarterback:

This was a tough selection but ultimately took the guy sporting jewelry. Next year, when Larry Fitz decides to call it a career, the result may and should be different.

Phil Simms played his entire 14 year career with the Giants between 1979-1993. Although the first few years of his career were littered with injury, he found success playing in New York. Phil had an up and down career with the Giants, but when healthy, was clearly a superstar.

Simms will be most remembered for arguably one of the best performances by a quarterback in a Super Bowl. In Super Bowl XXI, Simms only had three incomplete passes, two of which were drops by his receivers. Phil threw for three touchdowns en route to winning Super Bowl XXI MVP honors.

Simms enjoyed many broadcasting gigs following his retirement, but will be replaced in the CBS booth this season by the recently retired Tony Romo.

Phil finished his career with 33,462 yards and 199 touchdown passes. his number 11 has been retired by the New York Giants, and had it not been for nagging injuries throughout the course of his career, his bust would be on display in Canton. An emotional speech at the ceremony resulted in Simms putting on his jersey one last time and completing a long pass to Lawrence Taylor, who later admitted he was more nervous about catching that pass than any other play in his career.

Larry Fitzgerald will more likely than not finish his career with numbers more suited for the Hall of Fame, taking over this spot in the future.
